    The Filmmaker's Journal

    Our Manifesto

A Daily Paper of Record for the Movies

The Filmmaker's Journal is a daily paper of record for cinema — for the people who make films, the people who fund them, the people who programme them, and the audiences who love them. We cover the craft, the business, the festivals and the culture of moviemaking around the world.

    One Industry, Many Cinemas

Cinema does not stop at a border. A premiere on the Lido is a release strategy in Los Angeles by Monday and a streaming launch in Mumbai by the end of the month. The world's filmmakers, studios, festivals and exhibitors operate as a single, interconnected art form and industry — but the writing about it is still scattered across trade sheets, blogs, paywalls and social feeds.

The Filmmaker's Journal was built to bring it onto one page. Each day, we publish original reporting on industry news, festivals and awards, independent film, new releases, classics and restorations, the craft of filmmaking, the directors shaping contemporary cinema, the business of producing and financing pictures, and the broader culture around the movies.

For the People Who Make Films

We write for working filmmakers first — directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, production designers, writers, financiers, distributors, programmers, critics. The reader we picture is someone who actually has to make decisions about a film: which festival to submit to, which DP to hire, which sales agent to trust, which restoration is worth the trip, which new voice is worth watching.

That focus shapes everything. We name names. We publish the deal terms when we can get them. We talk to the people who actually held the camera or signed the cheque. We treat technical craft with the seriousness it deserves and we treat festival politics with the scepticism it has earned.

For the People Who Love Them

We also write for the audience — for readers who simply love movies and want a serious, well-edited place to read about them. That means reviews and reappraisals that take film history seriously, festival coverage that explains why a prize matters, profiles of the directors and craftspeople behind the work, and reporting on the changing economics of how movies actually reach a screen.

    What We Cover

The paper publishes in nine standing sections. Industry News covers the business of cinema — studios, streamers, exhibitors, guilds, deals. Festivals & Awards covers the global circuit from Cannes and Sundance to the Oscars race. Independent Film covers indie distribution, microbudget breakouts and emerging filmmakers. New Releases covers what is opening this week, in theatres and on streaming. Classics & Restoration covers the canon, the rediscoveries and the repertory programmes returning great films to the screen. Craft & Technique covers cinematography, editing, sound, design and the tools of the trade. Directors & Auteurs profiles the filmmakers shaping contemporary cinema. Producing & Financing covers how films get made and paid for. Cinema & Culture covers how movies and the world around them shape each other.

    What We Are Not

We are not a press release wire. We do not exist to flatter studios, bury bad films or chase spoilers. We are not a fan site, and we are not a trade gossip column. We try to write about cinema the way our best critics and reporters always have — with knowledge, with patience, and with a real love of the form.

    Our Standards

Original reporting. Sourced numbers. Named filmmakers. Opinion clearly labelled. Conflicts of interest disclosed. Corrections published in plain sight. We assume our readers can handle complexity, and we try not to waste their time.

    An Invitation

Cinema is one of the most important art forms of the last hundred years and one of the most consequential industries of the next. The Filmmaker's Journal exists to cover it as both — seriously, daily, and with the attention it deserves. If that is the kind of paper you want to read, we are glad you are here.
